How many receptacle outlets on a 20 amp circuit? The NEC doesn’t give a set limit… it gives you a way to calculate the load. ⚡ 1 yoke = 180 VA ⚡ That comes out to 13 yokes (based on load calculation) But in the real world, electricians design based on actual usage — not just math. 👉 That’s why you’ll usually see 8–12 receptacle outlets per circuit ⚡ The NEC is the minimum — not the goal#electriciansoftiktok #ElectricianLife #ElectricalExam #ElectricianTraining #ElectricianTips

15A Outlets on a 20A Circuit — Legal or Not? • • • Is it legal to install 15A receptacle outlets on a 20A branch circuit? According to NEC Table 210.21(B)(3), yes—a 20A circuit (protected by a 20A breaker) is permitted to have 15A or 20A receptacles, as long as they are duplex. However, a single receptacle on a 20A circuit must be rated 20A. Also, you cannot install a 20A receptacle on a 15A circuit, as that would be misleading and against code.

For commercial occupancies, receptacle outlets shall be calculated at not less than 180 volt-amperes, see 220.14(I). This means that you can install thirteen receptacles on a 20A/120V general-purpose circuit [20A x 120V/180VA]. There is no limit on the number of receptacles on a 15A/120V general-purpose circuit! Note: This post is about the number of receptacle outlets on a 20A circuit, the rating of the receptacle 15/20A is irrelevant; 15A receptacles are permitted on either 15A or 20A circuits, see Table 210.21(B)(3). The NEC allows a 15-ampere receptacle on a 20-ampere circuit under certain conditions. You’ll find this in NEC 210.21(B)(3) – Receptacle Ratings. • Individual Receptacle on an Individual Branch Circuit: If you install a single receptacle (one yoke, one outlet), it must be rated not less than the branch circuit rating. So, a single 15A receptacle cannot go on a 20A branch. • Two or More Receptacles or Outlets: If the circuit has two or more receptacles (such as a duplex), then 15A receptacles are permitted on a 20A branch circuit. The code language in the table under 210.21(B)(3) shows that for a 20-amp branch circuit, the permissible receptacle ratings are 15 or 20 amps (as long as it’s not a single receptacle). 👉 In short: • Single receptacle on 20A circuit → must be 20A receptacle • Duplex or multiple receptacles on 20A circuit → 15A receptacle is allowed ElectricianTips #NECCode #ElectricalCode #ElectricianLife#ElectriciansOfTikTok @⚡️The Flash Electric⚡️ @⚡️NEC_NERD⚡️🤓 @Mike Holt Enterprises @mikeholtnec

15 AMP vs 20 AMP Receptacle ⚡ Do you know the difference between a 15A and a 20A outlet? This simple detail can prevent overloads, tripped breakers, and fire hazards. 🔌 15A Receptacle (NEMA 5-15R) • Used on standard household circuits • Wired with 14 AWG • Most common in homes 🔌 20A Receptacle (NEMA 5-20R) • Used for higher-load circuits • Wired with 12 AWG • Required for heavy-duty equipment 💡 Tip: The sideways slot = 20 amps Follow @AboveElectric for real-world electrical tips and trade knowledge. #ElectricianLife #ElectricalTips #NECCode #TradeSchool #ApprenticeLife
