In another post by @honeydripbylov: “When I first started doing chainmaille I was utterly confused about what AR was. But actually it's quite simple and there a just a few basics to understand. AR stands for aspect ratio and all it is, is the way we measure chainmaille rings to determine which patterns they can be used for. AR is a ratio of the rings diameter (distance from one end to the other inside the ring) and the thickness of the wire. How it's calculated isn't to important as you can find charts on the internet which shows AR for all combinations of wire thickness (also called gauge) and ring diameter. Or you can get a guide like the one i have from chainmail joe where you can place the rings on the chart to identify them. What's important to understand is that several different sizes of rings will have the same AR meaning they can be used to make the same patterns. There are 2 different systems used to measure the gauge or thickness of the wire which is super important to check when ordering rings or wire as different shops use different measurement system. AWG or American Wire Gauge is one size smaller than SWG or Standard Wire Gauge. That means a size 16 SWG is the same as size 14 AWG as both are 1.6mm thick. Weaves can often be made using a range or ARs for example the Byzantine chain can be made with ARs from 3.5 to 6. But keep in mind that smaller rings or ARs that make a tighter version of the weave are going to be much harder. Tighter weaves will also always produce a much stiffer chain or weave. I highly recommended this @chainmailjoe booklet for anyone starting out with chainmaille as it does a wonderful job depicting how to make the most common weaves. Let me know if you have any questions on ARs or anything else about chainmaille. Next I'll be showing you how to make the Byzantine weave and the trinity variation I showed here! With love, Lovisa”.
